Fun Weekend Ideas Friday: Riding Bikes at the Beach

How can you resist this scenic view?

Summer is here and the weather is beautiful! (Although it’s been a bit too humid recently…weird). Get off the couch this weekend and enjoy it by the beach.

We all love laying out at the beach and just watching the waves, but sometimes you’re in the mood for something a little more active. When this happens, head to the nearest bike rental shop (every beach city has at least a few) and rent a bike!

I have a bike of my own, but unfortunately it doesn’t fit in my car. So when I’m in Santa Monica I hit up Sea Mist Rentals and rent one instead. This place is the best of all the bike rental shops in SaMo. It has a super-convenient location (right below the pier across from the aquarium) and super-low prices. It’s about half the price of the fancy shop in Parking Structure 8 on Colorado and 2nd! One hour of riding will only set you back $7. Even better, they pro-rate times. So if you are gone for an hour and a half, you only pay for an hour and a half, not 2 hours.

It’s super easy to rent a bike, too. You just walk up and fill out your name and cell number. They take one ID per group, so make sure that someone has their driver’s license on them! You have the option to get baskets and bike locks, if you want to park it somewhere and grab lunch. They set you all up with a bike and you’re good to go!

I also love that the bikes aren’t labeled. There’s no touristy signs or “Sea Mis” labels on the bikes, so you don’t look silly on the boardwalk. Of course, no matter what your bike looks like, you won’t look as ridiculous as all the tourists on Segways along the beach. Just saying.
What is your favorite active thing to do at the beach? Do you prefer to be on dry land (like biking, running or volleyball) or in the water (like swimming, SUP or surfing)? Let me know in the comments!
